The United Kingdom is a popular destination for relocation and pet travel The UK follows a PET TRAVEL SCHEME for all pets arriving in to the UK. There have been many recent changes (APRIL 2017) regarding the rules and requirements for importing pets to the UK. While there is no quarantine for cats and dogs in the UK import requirements are met, detailing a safe and smooth move plan for your pet can be a delicate process.

What is involved in relocating your pet to the UK? The UK has specific requirements when importing your pet to the UK. They follow a set of rules and regulations referred to as the Pet Travel Scheme. Some new changes took effect December 2014 requiring owners to arrive into the country within +/- 5 days in order for the animal to be considered a "non commercial" pet. This requires some planning with the vaccines, travel booking, and vet appointment for final health certificate. Additional documentation may be required for pets with vaccines more than 12 months old.

Effective April 2017, The UK now requires a ToR (Transfer of Residence) number required for customs processing and VAT for all pets importing to the UK. Continental Pet Relocation can help with this process to ensure you have everything you need to import your pet to the UK. It is advisable to complete the ToR Application as soon as possible to avoid having to pay the VAT when you pet arrives. If your pet arrives the UK prior to receiving your ToR number, you will have to pay the VAT and seek reimbursement.

Basic Requirements for pets entering the UK from the US

RABIES VACCINATION REQUIREMENT

The rabies vaccination rules became stricter in 2017, as DEFRA began enforcing that the primary rabies vaccination (the one given right after the microchip) must either be a 1-year vaccination or a 3-year vaccination still within the first year when the pet travels. This means that if your pet was given a 3-year vaccination right after the microchip that is now in its second or third year, it is no longer valid for entry into the UK.

Additional Details:

The rabies vaccine must be at least 21 days old at the time of the pet's final health exam before departure.
The vaccine must have been administered after the microchip was implanted.
This rule applies to pets coming from EU countries and listed countries such as the United States - if you're coming from an unlisted country, stricter rules will apply.
Example Scenario: If a pet has a microchip implanted and is then given a three year rabies vaccination, the vaccination must be within its FIRST YEAR when the pet arrives in the UK. Otherwise, the pet would need another vaccination in order for it to be considered valid.

EU Pet Passports

Many people believe that their pet needs an EU Pet Passport to travel to the UK. Although an EU Pet Passport does simplify the process, it is not necessary for importing pets into the UK.

An EU Pet Passport can only be issued by an official veterinarian in the European Union (EU) so if your pet is coming from another country outside of the EU and does not have an EU Pet Passport yet, you'll need to follow the above-listed requirements.

Pets that have an EU Pet Passport with an expired rabies vaccination listed or a vaccination that was updated by a veterinarian who was not in the EU will also be required to follow the import steps listed above - which includes completing the EU Health Certificate endorsed by the USDA or Government Military Vet.

On the other hand, if your pet does have an EU Pet Passport and the rabies vaccination was recorded by an EU veterinarian and is still valid, your pet will only need the EU Pet Passport to travel to the UK. The airline your pet is traveling with will still require a health check by an accredited within 10 days of travel to ensure your pet is okay to fly, but an endorsement from a government vet of this health certificate is not required.

Commercial vs. Non-Commercial Pet Travel

If you're planning pet travel to the UK (or anywhere in the EU), you've probably heard of the

5-Day Rule. Since 2014, pet owners must travel to the UK within five days of their pet's arrival in order to avoid the move being labeled as a "commercial" shipment. While you can still import your pet as a commercial shipment, the health certificate is only valid for 48 hours rather than 10 days and you are subject to additional taxes at import.

Commercial pet moves require a health certificate to be completed (and endorsed by a government entity) within 48 hours of the pet's departure. If you don't have a government office (like a USDA office in the United States, for example) nearby you may need to consider having your net depart from a different city to make the short time frame work.

Once your pet arrives in the UK as a commercial movement, you will be expected to pay at least 44 GBP or more depending on the size of your pet in additional DEFRA taxes. Also, the arrival process for a commercial move may take more time than a non-commercial move considering the stricter requirements.

BREXIT

DEFRA has been advising pet owners planning to travel with their pets to Europe after Brexit to contact their vets at least four months before travel to prepare for all scenarios, including No Deal.

If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on 31 JANUARY 2020, pet owners would need to visit their vet 4 months PRIOR TO DEPARTURE!

BREXIT NO DEAL SCENARIO FOR PETS RELOCATING FROM THE US TO THE UK:

Vet will need to ensure the pet has a microchip, proof of a primary rabies vaccination and is current, and a blood test to demonstrate sufficient levels of rabies antibody. The blood test needs to be carried out a minimum of 30 days after its last rabies vaccination (whether that's a booster or initial vaccination) and a minimum of three calendar months before travel. A current EU pet passport issued in the UK will not be valid for travel to the EU. Instead, pet owners would need to apply an Animal Health Certificate no more than 10 days before travel.

This new rule applies to all imported goods, not just pets.
Pet owners should apply to the ToR in advance, as we've noticed it takes two weeks to 30 days to process.

Pet travel and booking your furry family member with the airlines can be a confusing process and often people are misinformed, resulting in foiled plans and frustration. Add to this process the complex requirements for pets entering foreign countries and it can become overwhelming. We would like to offer a brief overview for booking with just a few of the pet friendly airlines. All airlines require an IATA approved travel crate for pets traveling as cargo and all airlines refuse any pets who have been sedated or appear to have been sedated.

Importance of travel crate acclimation

We strongly advocate for pets to have time to become acclimated to their travel crate well in advance of travel. To ensure your pet becomes accustomed to being in a crate designed for airline travel, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you obtain the crate as far in advance of travel as possible. To reduce stress during travel, it is crucial that your pet is comfortable and feels secure in their crate. This process is called "crate acclimation," and you should ask your veterinarian or a trainer, or conduct research online, for tips on how to acclimate your pet. We recommend setting the crate up in your home with an open door, comfortable bedding (ideally the same bedding that they will travel with) and offer treats and food in the crate. This will allow them to become acclimated to the crate while encouraging a positive association with their travel crate.

With International flight bookings, United requires bookings to be made by a Professional Pet Shipping Company for some countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and Singapore. The UK requires that your pet travel unaccompanied. Some countries require an import permit and United will require the import permit number at the time of the airline booking. Your pet will be required to have a travel crate. There are several different manufacturers of airline approved travel crates such as Petmate Sky Kennel or Vari Kennel and some store brands like Petco. Keep in mind that some crates will be advertised as "airline approved", yet these may not meet requirements. One example is the crate that has clamps rather than metal screws to secure the top and bottom piece. This crate may have a sticker or tag that claims it is airline approved, however the airlines require the crates to be secured with metal screws. In addition, the regulations for crates will also depend on the breed of the pet as well as the destination (domestic vs international). Pet travel crates range in cost from $35-$750. Dog Training is essential to having a well behaved new member of your family!

Bringing home a new puppy can be a joyful occasion! You will want to start off on the right foot (and paw!) by teaching him a few important basic commands. Positive reinforcement is the best way to train your dog so that he feels secure and trusting and confident in his ability to succeed.

Usually around 8 weeks, puppies can begin training with praise and positive reinforcement. They can start wearing a collar and becoming acclimated with the leash.

Training should never involve any physical punishment or anger. All you need is a firm NO! when correcting unwanted behavior. Rewarding behavior is always encouraging. Use training treats or something small and chewy that can be eaten quickly so you can keep the progress moving forward. You can also offer praise or a chance to play with a favorite toy. A great way to condition your new puppy to like your praise is to offer praise at the same time you are giving them a treat. Tell him he's a "Good Boy!!" when handing him the treat and he will make the association quickly.

Around 12-16 weeks, you can begin teaching your puppy the 5 basic commands:

Sit, Come, Down, Stay, Heel

Keep your training sessions brief around 10 minutes at the most at first. Always end the session on a positive note with reward for a command your puppy already knows.

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG TO SIT

This is a good command to start with because it's the easiest dog obedience command to teach.

"Sit" is a command every dog should know. Dogs get excited when they're getting ready to go outside or go for a walk. Some have a hard time waiting while supper is being prepared and some dogs go bonkers when the doorbell rings.

Teaching your dog to sit and wait helps subdue their excitement so you can answer the door, finish their supper or get their leash attached to their collar. The sit command also works well to keep them from jumping up on people.

A few easy instructions to teach the "Sit" command:

Hold a treat close to your dog's nose
Move your hand up, allowing his head to follow the treat and causing his bottom to lower
Once he's in a sitting position, say "Sit and give him a treat.
Once he's mastered this, it's always a good idea to ask your dog to sit before he eats, gets a treat, goes for a walk or any other time you would like him calm and seated.

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG TO COME

"Come" means to stop what he's doing and return to you. It's an easy command to teach, and important in an emergency, if he should break loose from his leash or pen, or rush out the front door when company arrives. The come command helps you control situations much easier, and allows you to keep your dog out of harm's way.

It's best to start this training lesson using a leash.

Ask your dog to sit, squat down in front of him and say "Come" while gently pulling on the leash.

When he comes to you, reward him with affection and a treat

Once he's mastered it with the leash, try the command without the leash

Recommend teaching this command in a quiet area, and indoors. Squat down about 5-10 feet from your dog and say the word

"Come." If he starts moving toward you, give him verbal praise and encouragement. Like all training, use a happy, encouraging tone of voice. You want him to think that the process is fun, not scary. Once he reaches you, praise him and give him a treat

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG DOWN

This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training.

Find a particularly good smelling treat, and hold it in your closed fist.

Hold your hand up to your dog's snout. When he sniffs it, move your hand to the floor, so he follows.
Then slide your hand along the ground in front of him to encourage his body to follow his head.
Once he's in the down position, say "Down," give him the treat, and share affection.

Repeat it every day. If your dog tries to sit up or lunges toward your hand, say "No" and take your hand away. Don't push him into a down position, and encourage every step your dog takes toward the right position. After all, he's working hard to figure it out!

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG TO STAY

"Stay is harder for some dogs to learn, but it's well worth the time and patience it takes to teach it. Dogs don't always understand they could be in danger, and using stay can stop them from running in front of a car or grabbing something they shouldn't have. It gives you time to remove the danger or wait until it's gone. Staying can be hard for a dog to do when he sees something he wants, especially if it's a cat or squirrel in the yard across the street; however, it's an essential command every puppy and dog should know.

Before attempting this one, make sure your dog is an expert at the "Sit" command.

First, ask your dog to "Sit."
Then open the palm of your hand in front of you, and say "Stay."
Take a few steps back. Reward him with a treat and affection if he stays.
Gradually increase the number of steps you take before giving the treat.
Always reward your pup for staying put - even if it's just for a few seconds.

This is an exercise in self-control for your dog, so don't be discouraged if it takes a while to master, particularly for puppies and high-energy dogs. After all, they want to be on the move and not just sitting there waiting.

HOW TO TEACH YOUR DOG TO HEEL

"Heel" helps you control your dog while on a walk and when you are around other people or dogs. Instead of allowing your dog to pull on his leash, heel puts him by your side where you have better control of him should you meet another dog or person while walking.

The Heel command is an advanced command and can take time and patience to teach.

Position your dog on your left hand side. Have some small training treats in your left hand. Have him sit and stay. When you are ready to walk, move slowly and say the word heel as your dog walks beside you. Offer a treat every step or two as a reward.

If your dog starts to pull or veer off or lose focus, stop walking. Ask him to sit, stay, and then start walking slowly again once he is calm and focused on you.

Consistency is key with the heel command. Be patient and practice this command each time you walk your dog. Don't give up on him - a well behaved dog on a leash is worth the work!

Don't rush the process. Remember, you're asking a lot of your dog. If you take it up a notch and he's really struggling, go back to the previous stage.

Just these five simple commands can help keep your dog safer and improve your communication with him. It's well worth the investment of your time and effort. Remember, the process takes time, so only start a dog obedience training session if you're in the right mindset to practice calm-assertive energy and patience.

What is an APHIS 7001 Form?

The APHIS 7001 Form is an international pet shipping health certificate required by the airlines dated within 10 days of travel. The USDA will only endorse this form if the country that your pet is importing to does not have their own health certificate.

Most countries have their own health certificate required to be endorsed by the USDA, so most often the APHIS 7001 Form serves as a US health certificate for export required only by the airlines.

How to Obtain and Complete the APHIS 7001

The APHIS 7001 Form is an international health certificate used for pet shipping, however it can also be used for domestic pet shipping. What are the first steps to relocating my pets internationally

1. Find a USDA-Accredited Veterinarian in your area

The coordination of the vet appointment and endorsement of the APHIS 7001 form must be done at a maximum within 10 days of travel for the airlines. Depending on the country of import and the status of the shipment (commercial or non commercial), the required time allowance for the health certificate may be less than 10 days. Commonly Overlooked Steps

Start PCS planning early - don't let your move date creep up on you.
Make a budget for expenses before reimbursement or for non-reimbursable expenses.
Create a new spending plan that reflects the cost of-living difference and entitled allowances in the new location.
Keep all receipts - even if you won't be reimbursed for expenses, you may be able to deduct them on your taxes.
Have enough insurance on your personal property during transit and short- or long-term storage.
Safeguard and hand-carry important documents (birth certificates, airline tickets, passports, etc.) and valuables (jewelry, cash, etc.).

Move Types: Government, Personally Procured Move (PPM) or Both?

When you get your PCS orders, you have the option of having the government move your belongings. However, it may be possible to realize some savings by opting for a Personally Procured Move (commonly known as a Do-It-Yourself or DITY move). There are many factors to consider to make a DITY move worthwhile.

With a DITY move, you take on some additional responsibility, but you may decide that it's worth it given the potential financial and other benefits:

Money Left Over. If you're able to keep your costs down and ultimately spend less than the 95% it would cost the government to move you, you get to keep the leftover money.
More Time. When you receive move orders, you're given travel time so you can take care of moving arrangements. With a DITY move, you're allowed additional time, and if you plan efficiently, you can use the time to make the move less stressful.
Total Control. With a DITY move, you can decide which moving service you want to use and what you'd rather handle yourself.

Many service members take both approaches; this is called a partial DITY. For instance, they may allow the government to move most of their belongings, but make separate DITY arrangements for items that have high monetary or sentimental value or require special handling. The costs are reimbursable at the same percentage as a full DITY move. Think about choosing a DITY/PPM move very carefully. It's not for everyone. While the allure of potential savings is understandable, keep in mind that these savings may be consumed by miscellaneous expenses that a full government move might otherwise cover. Or the added responsibility may be more than you want during that stressful time. Permissive TDY (or House-Hunting Leave) At your commanding officer's discretion, your PCS can entitle you to up to 10 days of permissive Temporary Duty (TDY). What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a small, electronic chip enclosed in a glass cylinder that is about the same size as a grain of rice. The microchip itself does not have a battery - it is activated by a scanner that is passed over the area, and the radio waves put out by the scanner activate the chip. The chip transmits the identification number to the scanner, which displays the number on the screen.

It is injected by a vet, under the skin using a hypodermic needle, usually between the shoulder blades. It is no more painful than a typical injection, although the needle is slightly larger than those used for injection. No surgery or anesthesia is required - a microchip can be implanted during a routine veterinary office visit. If your pet is already under anesthesia for a procedure, such as neutering or spaying, the microchip can often be implanted while they're still under anesthesia.

The microchips presently used in pets only contain identification numbers. The microchip is not a GPS device and cannot track your animal if it gets lost. Although the present technology microchip itself does not contain your pet's medical information, some microchip registration databases will allow you to store that information in the database for quick reference.

Should I Be Concerned About My Privacy?

You don't need to be concerned about your privacy. The information you provide to the manufacturer's microchip registry will be used to contact you in the event your pet is found and their microchip is scanned. In most cases, you can choose to opt in or opt out of other communications (such as newsletters or advertisements) from the manufacturer. The only information about you contained in the database is the information that you choose to provide when you register the chip or update your information. There are protections in place so that a random person can't just look up an owner's identification.

Remember that having the microchip placed is only the first step, and the microchip must be registered in order to give you the best chances of getting your pet back. If that information is missing or incorrect, your chances of getting your pet back are dramatically reduced.

Does the Microchip Help Reunite Pets With Their Owners?

When an animal is found and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic, one of the first things they do is scan the animal for a microchip. If they find a microchip, and if the microchip registry has accurate information, they can quickly find the animal's owner.

A study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 21.9% of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners only 1.8% of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38.5% of the time. (JAVMA, July 15, 2009) For microchipped animals that weren't returned to their owners, most of the time it was due to incorrect owner information (or no owner information) in the microchip registry database - so don't forget to register and keep your information updated.

Should I Microchip My Pet?

Yes! This is an easy way to identify your pet which may become necessary should they ever become lost. The individual microchip number contains information about your pet and contact information used to help reunite you with your pet.

If you should ever want to relocate your pet internationally, the microchip is a requirement to comply with import regulations.

What does the Microchip Frequency Mean?

The frequency of a microchip actually refers to the frequency of the radio wave given off by the scanner that activates and reads the microchip. Examples of microchip frequencies used in the U.S. include 125 kilo Hertz (kHz), 128 kHz, and 134.2 kHz.

What Does ISO Standard Mean?

The International Standards Organization, or ISO, has approved and recommended a global standard for microchips. The global standard is intended to create an identification system that is consistent worldwide. For example, if a dog was implanted with an ISO standard microchip in the U.S. travels to Europe with its owners and becomes lost, the ISO standard scanners in Europe would be able to read the dog's microchip. If the dog was implanted with a non-ISO microchip and the ISO scanner was not forward- and backward-reading (universal), the dog's microchip might not be detected or be read by the scanner. The ISO standard frequency is 134.2 kHz. The forward reading scanners only detect 134.2 kHz (ISO standard) microchips, but will not detect 125 kHz or 128 kHz (non-ISO standard) microchips. Universal scanners, also called forward- and backward-reading scanners, detect all microchip frequencies. The main advantage of universal scanners is the improved chances of detecting and reading a microchip, regardless of the frequency. It also eliminates the need for multiple scanners with multiple frequencies.

When shipping pets internationally, it's best to make sure they have the ISO microchip which can be read worldwide.

Otherwise, the option to buy/rent a universal scanner to arrive with the pet is considered, assuming the country of import accepts this option.

My pet has a non ISO Microchip already and needs To have an ISO Microchip implanted Is this OK?

Do I need to have one removed? Will they interfere with each other? Which microchip will be detected by the scanner?

No, you do not need to have one of the microchips removed and no, they will not interfere with each other. The microchip detected by the scanner will depend on the scanner used - if it is a universal (forward- and backward-reading) scanner, it will probably detect each chip as it is passed over it. To detect the other chip, the scanner has to be reset and passed over the area where it is located. If it is a scanner that only reads one microchip frequency, it will only detect a microchip of that specific frequency and will not detect or read the other microchip.

If you know your pet has more than one microchip implanted, make sure you keep the database information updated for each microchip. People don't routinely assume there's more than one microchip (because it is very uncommon), so they will try to find the owner based on the registry number of the microchip they detect.

If you are shipping your pet internationally, make sure that all documents list both microchip numbers with the focus on the ISO microchip which is readable worldwide.

Both chips will function normally. If your pet is scanned with a scanner that only reads 125 kHz chips, only the 125 kHz chip will be detected. If your pet is scanned with a universal (forward- and backward-reading) scanner, it could detect one or both chips separately

Although we can't guarantee that a shelter or veterinary clinic will always be able to read every microchip, the risk that this will happen is very low, and getting even lower. Animal shelters and veterinary clinics are very aware of the concerns about missing an implanted microchip, and take extra measures to determine if a microchip is present before a decision is made to euthanize or adopt out the animal. Universal scanners are becoming more available, and solve the challenge of detecting different microchip frequencies.

What should I do to "maintain" my pet's microchip?

Once your pet is microchipped, there are only three things you need to do:

1) make sure the microchip is registered; 2) ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip at least once per year to make sure the microchip is still functioning and can be detected; and 3) keep your registration information up-to-date.

If you've moved, or if any of your information (especially your phone number) has changed, make sure you update your microchip registration in the manufacturer's database as soon as possible.

Have you ever asked the question, why does my dog eat grass or chase his tail? Some dogs display some funny behaviors that we often wonder what the cause is. We answered just a few top questions that people ask about dogs.

WHY DOES MY DOG EAT GRASS?

If you Google "Why do dogs eat grass" you will find a zillon websites that all seem to have their theory. I glanced at about two dozen of these and every one of them mentioned eating grass to deal with an upset stomach and to cause vomiting. I have personally never found this explanation to be particularly satisfying because the cause and effect issues are all tangled up in it - "Do dogs eat grass to make themselves vomit, or do they vomit because they ate grass?" The other issue is that many dogs eat grass and don't end up vomiting. My Border Collie, Panda, eats grass daily during her park outing, and she almost never vomits.

The second most popular answer is that dogs evolved from wild canines, such as wolves, who hunt and eat mostly grass eating animals like mice, rabbits, or deer. When these canines consume their prey they will usually eat pretty much all of it, including the grass filled stomach of whichever creature they just killed. It's also mentioned that grass eating may have evolved to help conceal their scent from their prey.

LET'S PUT IT TO THE SCIENTIFIC TEST:

There have been a series of surveys that were designed to test the hypotheses that most plant eating in dogs is associated with illness and results in vomiting, or that grass eating is associated with some kind of dietary deficiency.

The initial study was a survey of 25 veterinary students who had pet dogs. All of the students reported that their dogs ate grass.

None reported seeing any signs of illness before their dogs ate the grass and only 8% said that their dogs regularly vomited after eating it.

The researchers then conducted a second survey which involved 47 dog owners who had brought their pets to the UC Davis teaching hospital for outpatient care. This group reinforced the fact that grass eating was quite common since 79% had observed their dogs eating plants (mostly grass). When questioned about their dog's behavior before and after eating grass it was found that signs of illness were infrequent (only four dogs) and vomiting afterward was also not common (only six dogs).

After these two preliminary studies the researchers expanded their data sample by conducting a large web-based survey which netted 1,571 usable data sets from dog owners. Once again it was found that grass eating was common since 68% of the respondents said their dogs ate grass on a daily or weekly basis. Only 8% reported that their dogs frequently showed signs of illness before eating grass and 22% reported that their dogs regularly vomited afterwards. In the grass eating dog population they found that it was the younger dogs who ate grass most frequently and they were less likely to appear sick before or to vomit afterwards. The research did find, however, that if a dog showed signs of illness before eating grass it was more likely to vomit afterwards.

As for the notion that dogs are eating grass in order to make up for some kind of dietary deficiency no support was found. Dogs that had their diet regularly supplemented by plant matter (vegetables or fruit) were no less likely to eat grass which seems to kill the idea that dogs are eating grass to make up for the absence of vegetable matter in their normal food intake.

The researchers conclude that grass eating is a common behavior that usually occurs in normal dogs and is generally not associated with illness or dietary needs. They go on to suggest that grass eating may reflect an innate predisposition inherited from dogs' wild ancestors. This is supported by research on droppings left by wolves. Such research finds evidence of grass in 11 to 47% of the stool samples studied. The usefulness of grass eating in these wild canines is that it can help to purge intestinal parasites. The plant material passes through the intestinal tract and the fibrous matter increases the intestinal contractions and wraps around the worms or nematodes which may be infecting the animal. In this way the grass helps to purge the system of these potentially harmful parasites. Although most pet dogs are free of such worms they nonetheless may still have that predisposition to eat grass which was helpful to their ancestors living in the wild.

An alternate suggestion, and what I tend to think, is that dogs may eat grass simply because they like the taste of it.

DO DOGS DREAM?

You've probably seen it happen - your sleeping dog suddenly lets out a woof as his legs begin to twitch. Is he dreaming?

Many scientists say there is evidence to support the idea that dogs do, in fact, experience dreams. Researchers using an electroencephalogram (EEG) have tested canine brain wave activity during sleep. They've found that dogs are similar to humans when it comes to sleep patterns and brain wave activity. Like humans, dogs enter a deep sleep stage during which their breathing becomes more irregular and they have rapid eye movements (REM). It is during REM sleep that actual dreaming and, often, involuntary movements take place. Dogs may move their legs as if they are running, whine or whimper as if excited, and breathe rapidly or hold their breath for short periods.

Not all dogs dream equally. Research suggests that small dogs dream more than larger dogs. A Toy Poodle may dream once every ten minutes while a Golden Retriever may only dream once every 90 minutes. Dreaming also seems to occur more frequently in puppies. This may be because they are processing huge quantities of newly acquired experiences.

What do dogs dream about? Since no dog has ever told anyone about a dream he's had, we can only guess. It's likely that dogs dream in a similar fashion to humans, replaying the everyday activities that make up their existence, like chasing, playing, and eating.

If you've ever been tempted to wake your dog during a dream, try and resist. It's best to "let sleeping dogs lie." Dogs, like humans, need uninterrupted sleep for healthy mental activity.

WHY DO DOGS HOWL?

You've probably been here before: you're leading your dog around the neighborhood on a typical pack walk when suddenly there's a siren way off in the distance. You barely notice it, but your dog's ears immediately perk up. As it gets closer and closer (and louder and louder), she becomes more and more agitated or excited. Finally, it rounds the corner, headed your way, and as it nears you and passes by, your pooch lets loose with a glorious howl, head thrown back like she was a wolf out in the desert.

What's going on here? Why do dogs howl? There are a number of reasons. Some that are no big deal, and others that should be addressed.

Ancestry

Think your dog sounds like a howling wolf? That's probably because dogs are distantly related to wolves, and the urge to howl is still embedded in their genetic code. Sometimes they don't even know why they're doing it, just that it's what they're supposed to be doing. Howling is totally normal and natural as long as it's not chronic, pervasive, or invasive.

Communication

In the wild, wolves howl to tell a lost member of their pack where they are or to ward off another animal that's encroaching on their territory. For domesticated dogs, this may translate to howling at sirens ("Hey, I'm over here!"), howling when a strange dog comes near ("Too close, buddy!"), or both.

Howling like the above two examples should be expected and isn't anything to worry about as long as it isn't accompanied by aggression toward other dogs or people. Most dog owners even tend to find it pretty cute. However, there are situations where howling is a symptom of something deeper that needs to be fixed.

Sickness and injury

One of the ways that many dogs express the fact that they are hurt or sick is by howling or vocalizing in other ways. If you notice that your dog is making strange sounds or "talking more than normal, get them to the vet for a check-up.

Separation anxiety

Remember how wolves howl to find each other in the wild? Well, if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, it's possible that he'll start doing this every time you leave - not fun for you, the dog, or your neighbors.

How do you know that the howling is being caused by separation anxiety ? Because it's usually accompanied by another symptom, such as destroying things, pacing around, or eliminating inside the house. Howling of this kind will take time and consistent effort to overcome.

WHY DO DOGS HAVE WHISKERS?

Dog whiskers are found on both sides of their muzzle, as well as on the forehead above the eyes, on their chin and above the upper lip. As puppies grow, the whiskers are among the first hairs to develop. Unlike the neatly arranged 12 whiskers in four rows on each side of a cat's face, dog whiskers are more varied in their pattern depending on their breed and genetics.

Whiskers are twice as thick and coarser than regular dog hair. Their roots are set three times deeper and packed with nerves and blood vessels that make each individual whisker a super sensitive receptor to movement. Air moving it or objects brushing against it causes the whisker to vibrate and stimulates the nerves. Dog whiskers are as sensitive as our fingertips. Whiskers play an important role in helping dogs understand and move through their environment.

The primary function of whiskers is to aid a dog's vision, and they are often referred to as tactile hair. Whiskers pick up the slightest vibrations in the air, as well as subtle shifts in wind direction and speed. This alerts dogs to the presence of prey or other objects close by and tells them size, shape and if there's any motion. Whiskers are why a dog can hunt in the dark and keep from crashing into furniture, falling down steps or bumping into walls as he walks around the house at night. Moving air currents cause the whiskers to vibrate and alert a dog to an obstacle or prey. When a dog is approaching something in his path, air is stirred up as he moves. When the air hits a wall, other surfaces or another animal, it bounces back and is picked up by the dog's radar-like whiskers.

The vibrissae are also handy for finding small objects. Dog eyes can't focus on objects up close, so information gathered from his whiskers helps him find, identify and pick up something that's right under his nose.

Whiskers help dogs know if they can fit through a narrow opening or not. They are sensory receptors that help canines navigate. Dogs bred to go to ground need to know if a hole is big enough for them to crawl through. These receptors also give him information about obstacles that may be in the way and they also send information about the shape and size of a critter hiding in a den. Whiskers also help protect the face and eyes. When a dog brushes his whiskers against dirt, tall grass or anything else, it causes him to blink his eyes and avoid injury. The whiskers above his eyes lets him know if he's too close to something and helps to keep him from getting poked in the eye.

Every now and then you might find a whisker that's fallen out. It will grow back, but you should never try to pull a whisker out.

You might run across a groomer who wants to cut your dog's whiskers. However, it's best not to trim the whiskers because that makes it more difficult for a dog to feel around his face and move with confidence. Because whiskers are very sensitive, pulling on them will cause your pet discomfort and stress. The importance of the whiskers is easier to understand when you consider the areas of the brain devoted to touch information. Almost 40% of those areas are dedicated to the regions where the whiskers are located. In fact, each individual whisker can be traced back to a specific location in the brain.

Think about your dog's whiskers as tiny radar detectors that are so finely tuned they can help him detect a rabbit hiding under a bush or keep him from running face first into a wall. The superior hunting ability of canines is one reason why the human/dog partnership has been so successful, and his whiskers help him do the job he was bred to do.

WHY DO DOGS CHASE THEIR TAILS?

Researchers found that variations on canine behavior in certain breeds may be down to where the dogs lived, their diet and their general upbringing.

Many well-known faces suffer from OCD to varying degrees.

David Beckham, for instance, cannot stand odd numbers of items in his fridge so if he has three cans of drink he will throw one out, according to an interview with wife Victoria.

Leonardo DiCaprio says he has to force himself not to step on every chewing gum stain on the pavement because he doesn't want his condition taking over his life. Genetics researchers from the University of Helsinki examined OCD among 400 dogs.

Breeds such as Bull Terriers and German Shepherds were particularly prone to chasing their tails, which led the researchers to believe genetics plays a role.

But then they noticed other connections. Dogs which were fed nutritional supplements like vitamins were less likely to chase their own tails, which suggested diet plays a part.

Dogs that were separated particularly early from their mother or had poor care from their mother also exhibited OCD-style signs of behavior. However the researchers found that a lack of exercise did not make any difference with tail-chasing.

Dogs most likely to chase their own tails were, generally, more timid and more afraid of loud noises. Different environmental and genetic factors have been suggested to predispose to compulsive behavior. Many stereotypes are breed-specific, which emphasizes the role of genes.

Here are a few reasons that dogs may chase their own tail:

Being confined in small quarters where movement is restricted
Boredom, especially in older dogs
The presence of fleas or irritated anal glands
Canine compulsive disorder, which although rare, can be treated with anti-obsessive medications such as Prozac.
Hereditary tendency, with the behavior being passed down from generations, especially in some breeds including German Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs and Bull Terriers
High cholesterol, which as suggested by veterinarian Marty Becker, could mean that the dog's cholesterol levels have blocked the flow of brain hormones, which control mood and behavior. (More exercise could be the solution in this case.)
Not knowing why the tail is there to begin with! This part of a puppy's body is fascinating to him, especially if he has no other playmates

HOW DO I INTRODUCE MY DOG TO OTHER DOGS?

Maximizing the potential for a great relationship between your new dog and your current dog is a two-step process. It involves the actual introduction and then management of the new dog in your home. We'll start with introductions and then give you guidelines for helping your dogs through the initial transition weeks of being together in your home.

Introductions

Leave your current dog at home when you pick up your new dog. One of the worst things you can do is to just throw the two of them together in your car and hope for the best!
Introduce your dogs on neutral territory, like on a short walk through your neighborhood, in a nearby park or in a friend's yard. Have two people, one to handle each dog, while keeping the dogs on leashes.
To minimize tension, try to keep the dogs' leashes loose so that they're not choking or feeling pressure on their throats.
Don't force any interaction between the dogs. If the dogs ignore each other at first, or if one dog seems reluctant to interact with the other, that's okay. Give both dogs time to get comfortable. They'll interact when they're ready.
Make the introduction positive and light-hearted. As the dogs sniff and get acquainted, encourage them in a happy tone of voice. At first, allow just a few seconds of sniffing. Then gently pull the dogs away from each other and let them walk around with their handlers. After a minute or two, you can lead the dogs back together and allow another several seconds of sniffing. These brief greetings help keep the dogs' interactions calm and prevent escalation to threats or aggression. You can also interrupt their interactions with simple obedience. After a brief sniff, lead the dogs apart, ask them to sit or lie down, and then reward them with treats.
Closely observe the dogs' body language. Their postures can help you understand what they're feeling and whether things are going well or not. Loose body movements and muscles, relaxed open mouths, and play bows (when a dog puts his elbows on the ground and his hind end in the air are all good signs that the two dogs feel comfortable. Stiff, slow body movements, tensed mouths or teeth-baring, growls and prolonged staring are all signs that a dog feels threatened or aggressive. If you see this type of body language, quickly lead the dogs apart to give them more distance from each other.

Once the dogs' greeting behaviors have tapered off and they appear to be tolerating each other without fearful or threatening behavior, you're ready to take them home. Before you take them inside, walk them together around your house or apartment building.
Be patient. Bringing a new dog home requires that everyone make some adjustments, especially your current pets. And it will take time for your dogs to build a comfortable relationship.

The First Couple of Weeks at Home

It's crucial to avoid squabbles during the early stages of your dogs' new relationship. Pick up all toys, chews, food bowls and your current dog's favorite items. When dogs are first forming a relationship, these things can cause rivalry. These items can be reintroduced after a couple of weeks, once the dogs have started to develop a good relationship.
Give each dog his own water and food bowls, bed and toys. For the first few weeks, only give the dogs toys or chews when they're separated in their crates or confinement areas.
Feed the dogs in completely separate areas. Pick up bowls when feeding time is over. (Some dogs will compete over bowls that recently contained food.)
Keep the dogs' playtime and interactions brief to avoid overstimulation and overarousal, which can lead to fighting.
Confine the dogs in separate areas of your home whenever you're away or can't supervise their interactions.
Give your new dog his own confinement area. When the dogs are separated, it might be a good idea to let them get to know each other through a barrier, like a baby gate. Your new dog should be gated in his confinement area, and your current dog should be free to move around and visit when he wants to.
When the dogs are interacting, interrupt any growling or bullying behavior with a phrase like "Too bad," and then quickly separate them for several minutes. Then allow them to be together again. If your dogs seem to react poorly to each other often, don't hesitate to contact a professional who can help you, such as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB), a board-certified veterinary behaviorist (Dip ACVB) or a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) who's experienced in treating problems between dogs. Be sure to sincerely praise your dogs when they are interacting nicely.
Spend time individually with each dog. Give each of them training time with you and playtime with other dogs outside your home.
If your dogs are very different in age or energy level, be sure to give the older or less energetic one his own private space where he can enjoy rest and down time.

WHY DO DOGS BURY BONES?

Dog owners have wondered for years why their four legged friends are constantly burying their favorite toys, or even some of the treats you give them. It's an age-old question, with an answer that dates back just as far! Whether your dog is outside digging every chance he gets or just waiting until the right moment, it's nothing to be worried about. It can be annoying - not to mention messy - but it's perfectly normal.

A dog's desire to bury his food and toys is rooted in instinct. Just like his ancestors, your dog is trying to protect and preserve his beloved item. In the wild, dogs and other canids never knew when their next meal was going to come, so they would bury what they didn't finish eating to protect it from scavengers. Later, when they were hungry again, they knew just where to look for an easy snack - in the spot they buried it! Furthermore, burying food often preserved meat and bones and kept them fresh and tasty. With their excellent sense of smell, it's no wonder that dogs can find food they buried deep into the ground days ago.

If you have a dog that just loves to bury his toys and food, he might actually be telling you you're being too generous. Dogs that don't eat their treats, but bury them instead, are exhibiting the exact same behavior their ancestors did - they're saving extra food for later. If you give your dog treats too often, he probably isn't very hungry and plans to return to his snack when he is!

The same goes for toys or other objects. Some dogs are more greedy than others and prefer to keep their prize possessions in a secret location. This location, more often than not, is probably under the dirt in your backyard! It's not unheard of for dogs to collect and bury other items too, such as jewelry and television remotes.

Burying can be quite a nuisance for dog owners, but it's healthy behavior on the dog's part. Some owners have dealt with the issue by teaching their dogs to hide toys under couches or inside blankets. In fact, they've even made games from the need to bury. Not only have they taught the dog where it's appropriate to hide something, they've taught which items are appropriate to hide. It's best not to let your pup bury food, because he might consume it later when it's gone rancid and become sick. So if you've got a dog that's constantly burying items, make sure you aren't giving too many treats or toys, and consider trying to teach your dog to hide his things in an acceptable place in your house.

WHY IS MY DOG'S NOSE WET?

The exact reason for a dog's cold, wet nose is up for debate. Here are a few proposed explanations:

Housekeeping: A dog's nose gets into everyone's business, not to mention his food dish. He constantly licks his nose to keep it clean, leaving it cool and wet.
Cooling off: A dog is covered with hair and is unable to sweat through the skin like a person does. Instead, dogs dissipate body heat through their mouths, by panting, and through their wet noses, by evaporation. Special mucous glands inside the dog's nostrils produce the clear, watery fluid that helps speed the cooling process.
Scent detection: A dog's sense of smell is approximately one million times greater than ours. It's thought that a wet nose helps absorb the tiny water droplets that carry a scent, making the most minuscule odors easier to detect.

Why May a Dog's Nose Sometimes Be Dry?

A healthy dog's nose is often warm and dry after sleep.
For some dogs, a dry, chapped nose is normal, especially with age.
Dehydration or exertion may cause a warm, dry nose.
Lying in the sun or spending time near a heat source may result in a dry nose.

When Should I Be Concerned About My Dog's Nose?

The temperature of your dog's nose is a poor gauge of overall body temperature. If your dog has a warm nose but is alert and acting normally, he's probably in perfectly good health. However, there are some times when a dog's dry, warm nose could be of concern. If it is associated with any of the following signs, see your veterinarian right away:

Listlessness.
Acting painful.
Poor appetite.
Redness and/or the flaking skin on or around the nose.
Presence of nasal discharge.
Cracked nose or sores and scabs on the nose.

Even if your dog's nose is wet and cool, any of the above signs require a visit to the veterinarian.

Depending on the destination, the health exam and health certificate may be required to be issued by an accredited vet and include USDA endorsement.

Travel Crate Requirements

An IATA approved travel crate must be used for travel. Crate size regulations may very depending on the airline used as well as the breed of the pet. International shipping requires that the kennel be ventilated on all 4 sides and there must be at least 3" of clearance above the pet's ears.

Here are a few tips to ensure the welfare of your animal during its journey:

Put a soft 'comfort blanket' with your scent on it and your pet's favorite toy in the transport container; the familiar scent will help to calm your pet. Get your pet used to the transport container at home: put the animal in the container for an hour or two at a time and then reward it with a treat. Many pets are very nervous before and during a flight, however it is not recommended and is prohibited by most airlines to sedate your pet prior to travel. An animal's reaction to sedatives cannot be foreseen because it can lead to circulation problems during the flight. Please speak to your vet about this.

Please note the following essential points.

Minimum requirement for cats ex USA and Canada is a series 200 kennel.
(200 series =28×20.5×21.5")
Minimum requirement for snub nosed dogs and cats is a 10% larger container than the minimum.
The container must be strong enough to protect your pet during transport, be secure enough to contain it and have sufficient ventilation on all four sides, to ensure the air quality in the container will not deteriorate.
The door must be secured in such a manner that it will not open accidentally or your pet cannot open it during handling and transport.
Your pet's nose and paws should not be able to fit through any ventilation opening or door mesh.
The container must have a water container and a food container accessible from the outside.
The water container must be secured and in proportion to the size of the pet but not take up too much of the floor space.
These dimension are minimum internal dimensions, please allow extra room if you are placing a blanket or bedding into the kennel. Pets must be able to stand, sit erect without touching the top of the kennel.

Certain breeds, such as examples listed below, may require an IATA 82 reinforced travel crate.

Airline Policies Regarding Temperatures

American Airlines - Allows pets to ship as cargo when temperatures are between 45-85 degrees Fahrenheit at each port of transport. If the temperature is forecasted to fall below 45 degrees, the pet will be required to have a certificate of acclimation. All snub nosed breeds are restricted var round.

Delta Airlines - Allows pets to ship from and to authorized ports that participate in the Summer Pet Program from May 15- September 15. If the port is not included in the Summer Pet Program, the pet can not fly when temperatures exceed 85 degrees. All snub nosed breeds are restricted if temperatures exceed 75 degrees.

United Airlines - Allows pets to ship year round. Requires snub nosed breeds to travel in a crate that provides at least 3" of clearance above the ears and is ventilated on all 4 sides. United does not accept English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Olde English Bulldogges or mixes of these breeds that are older than six months or weigh more than 20 pounds at any time of year. Dogs of these breeds and their mixes that are younger than six months or weigh less than 20 pounds are accepted year-round.

Lufthansa - Dogs which belong to the snub-nosed breeds are especially sensitive to temperature and stress.

Lufthansa will not ship certain breeds if the temperature at your departure, transfer or destination airport exceeds 27 °C (80.6 °F)

Border Collie

The Border Collie is very intelligent and aware of its surroundings. It is able to be trained to a high degree. This is one of the hardest working dogs thriving on praise. Border Collies are represented among the leaders in competitive levels in various sports, excelling in agility skills, obedience, sheepdog trials and Frisbee™. These competitions are right up their alley, and they are commonly used and often win. For those who wish to reach high levels in dog sports, the Border Collie is a gift from heaven. Farmers are also happy with them, as they were originally bred as a farmhand. The Border Collie is highly energetic with great stamina.

Provided they get sufficient activity to keep them occupied and plenty of exercise, the Border Collie will get along quite happily with other dogs and children, however they may be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex if you are not showing 100% leadership with them. They should not be trusted with small non canine pets, however there are plenty of Border Collies that live and get along with family cats. This breed can be sensitive and should be very well socialized as a puppy to prevent shyness. To be truly happy, they need a lot of consistent leadership, extensive daily exercise, and a job to occupy their minds. Border Collies will often challenge their owners' authority when they are adolescents. Dominance levels vary greatly, even within the same litter. You need to be this dog's firm, confident, consistent pack leader, or he may try and take over. If you allow him to take over, without enough socialization and mental and physical exercise, he can be highly reactive and sound sensitive, making him a poor choice for families with young children. The Border Collie is a perfectionist with a permanent will to please. This breed lives for serving you day in and day out. It is not an ideal pet for people who do not plan to spend a lot of time with it. These dogs are too intelligent to lie around the house all day with nothing to do. If you are not willing to put many hours a day into keeping these dogs well exercised in both mind and body, then it is recommended you do not adopt a Border Collie. There are other breeds that are similar yet not as demanding. If there is insufficient activity then it will find its own work to do, and that may not be what YOU had in mind when we say the word WORK. When not challenged daily they can and will become destructive. They cannot be left alone for too long with nothing to do if they have not been exercised to the point where they are both mentally and physically tired. A bored Border Collie will not make a good pet, as it can become neurotic and may start using its escape artist talents, among other behavior problems. They have strong herding instincts and may try to herd children and strangers and must be told this is not acceptable. Physical exercise alone is not sufficient for this very intelligent and highly energetic dog. They want to work and must do so with body and mind as one, carrying out different tasks. Fast and agile, these lively little dogs have boundless energy and thrive on hard work and play. They should also be taken on a long brisk daily walk. They are a delight to see streaking after a ball or a Frisbee or watch them work on a farm to herd sheep.

Bernese Mountain Dog

These cheerful dogs love children. They are very intelligent, easy to train and are natural watchdogs, but not overly dominant. A Bernese Mountain Dog will be your friend for life. Self-confident, alert and good-natured, be sure to socialize them well as a puppy. These dogs are slow to mature, acting like puppies longer than other breeds. They are rather friendly with strangers, and are generally good with other pets and dogs. The Bernese needs to be with people and not confined to the backyard or a kennel. These dogs are sensitive and should be trained firmly, but gently. Owners will only run into issues with this dog if they are not displaying natural leadership towards the dog, treating him more like their baby and lacking in the knowledge as to what dogs instinctually need to be stable minded. Owners who fail to convince the dog humans are alpha may find themselves with a totally different dog than what is described above. For a dog to feel secure it needs to clearly know the rules so they can be followed, thriving in structure, along with a daily pack walk to satisfy its instinct to migrate. The Bernese Mountain Dog was bred for draft work and can be trained to pull a cart or wagon.

Elephant Nature Park- Thailand

Manatees- Florida

Florida manatees are found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, bays, estuaries and coastal water ecosystems of the southeastern United States. They can live in fresh, brackish, or salt water. Manatees prefer waters that are about one to two meters (3-7 feet) deep. Along the coast, manatees tend to travel in water that is about three to five meters (10-16 feet) deep, and they are rarely seen in areas over six meters (20 feet) deep. This habitat provides them with sheltered living and breeding areas, a steady, easily obtainable food supply and warm water - all of which they need to survive. Parahawking - Nepal Himalayas

" Parahawking " involves paragliding alongside trained, endangered birds of prey in the Himalayas. It's part extreme adventure sport, part conservation effort. Just as we have the ability to swim with the dolphins, Scott wanted people to feel close to and care about birds of prey especially given their current ecological situation. Giant Panda Bears - China

As the national animal of China, the panda bear is practically the spokesman for the country. Sadly, the panda is also classified as an endangered species. Seeing pandas while visiting China is possible throughout the country and at a variety of zoos. If you want to witness them in a more natural habitat, head to Panda Base outside the city of Ya' an. More than 80 pandas are protected at this park. Volunteer programs are available and give you up close encounters with the pandas, which include helping staff with feedings and cleaning. The Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in Chengdu, home to around 60 pandas, offers another opportunity to see them. Since the base runs a breeding program, you may get to see baby pandas as well. For a small fee, you can even hold one. Along with breeding, the base trains the bears for a life in the wild with the intention of releasing them once they're prepared.

Penguins -Antarctica

There are few animals more closely associated with the barren and frigid landscape of Antarctica than penguins. While it's not an easy destination to visit, if you do make it to the end of the Earth, you'll likely find seven of the 17 species of penguins there, including the mighty emperor variety. PUPPY PROOF YOUR HOME!

Raising a puppy is a lot like raising small children - they get into everything! Some of what they get into can be hazardous to their health or to your possessions. You can make life safer for the puppy and your furniture by getting rid of hazards and temptations ahead of time.

To a puppy, the world is brand new and fascinating! He's seeing it all for the very first time and absolutely everything must be thoroughly investigated. Puppies do most of their investigating with their mouths - "Look at this! What is it? Something to eat? Something to play with?" Murphy's Law says that a puppy will be most attracted to the things he should least have - electrical cords, the fringe on your expensive oriental rug, your brand new running shoes, etc.

Preventing destructive and dangerous chewing is easier than trying to correct the puppy every second. Look around your home. What objects could be put up out of the way of a curious puppy? Bitter Apple spray can be applied to furniture legs, woodwork and other immovable items. Are there rooms your puppy should be restricted from entering until he's better trained and more reliable? Install a baby gate or keep the doors to those rooms closed.

Take a walk around your yard looking for potential hazards. If your yard is fenced, check the boundaries and gates for openings that could be potential escape routes. Puppies can get through smaller places than an adult dog. If your yard's not fenced, make a resolution right now that your puppy will never be allowed to run off lead without close supervision. He won't ever know enough to look both ways before crossing the street to chase a squirrel. Keep him safe by keeping him on leash!

CREATE A SCHEDULE FOR SUCCESSFUL POTTY TRAINING

Work out a schedule for you and the puppy. House training is much easier when the puppy's meals, exercise and play times are on a regular schedule throughout the day. It is important to remain consistent throughout the process so your puppy can learn the habit.

If your work or school schedule keeps you away from the home for more than 2 hours, consider hiring a pet sitter to help care for your new puppy. Housebreaking can be a time-consuming process. A puppy should be taken outside every two hours, up to six times a day, particularly after meals. Crate training or limited roaming access in a small, gated area works well, as puppies usually don't soil where they sleep. Look for signs, such as circling, that your puppy has to go. Don't punish him for soiling after the fact.

If you don't catch him in the act then he won't understand why you are correcting him five minutes or more after an incident. Consistency is key in whatever housebreaking method you choose.

Once your new puppy has successfully gone outside, it is important to reward the good behavior. It doesn't have to be a big, loud celebration, but a simple quiet approval or a treat can get the message across of a job well done.

Crate training provides your puppy with a secure, safe area where he can retreat when he's tired. Put in some soft bedding and even a treat to help coax him in at first so he learns it is a good place to be. A crate is not to be used for discipline or punishment. Have an open door policy and allow him to spend time in there with the door open. Create positive associations with the crate, such as always offering treats to enter the crate.

EVERYBODY NEEDS THEIR OWN PLACE

Decide where to put the dog crate, and have it set up and ready for his arrival. Where to keep the crate will depend on what's most convenient for you as well as the puppy's response. BE THE PACK LEADER

Puppies are naturally hard-wired to follow a pack leader. A pack leader is, by definition, strong, stable, and consistent; traits many new puppy owners forget. Many of my clients are strong leaders in their jobs, but when they come home, they turn to mush with their dogs.

Puppies sense our confidence levels and will take control if they perceive us as weak. When this happens, bad behaviors, such as excessive barking, chewing, leash-pulling, or anxiety, will develop.

The most important thing you can do is become your puppy's pack leader. This role doesn't begin when your dog is six months old or when he's bad; it should be maintained throughout the entire dog training experience. For your new puppy to grow into a healthy, balanced dog, you must demonstrate leadership from day one!

Please find safe ways to exercise your puppy too! As your puppy's pack leader, you must help to expend their energy in a productive way. For all dogs, this means a daily walk.

Reinforce your role as pack leader by always walking in front of your new puppy. Conversely, if your dog controls you on the walk, he's the pack leader. You should be the first one out the door and the first one in. Your puppy should be beside or behind you during the walk.

Have your puppy learn the basic commands such as sit, and always reinforce this behavior by asking them to sit before a walk, providing food, or treats.

VISIT TO THE VETERINARIAN

One of the cornerstones of good health for your puppy is regular veterinary care. It is crucial that your puppy maintains a nutritional diet and exercise routine to stay healthy and balanced. Plus, your vet can advise on heartworm, and flea and tick preventative care. While a lot goes into keeping your puppy in good health, it all begins with the first visit to the vet. IATA Kennel Requirements for Airline Travel

To be approved for air travel, your pet’s crate must meet the following specifications:

Construction

Use these four measurements to ensure you select the correct crate size:

A – Nose to base of tail (do not include the tail).
B – Elbow to the ground.
C – Width at the widest point.
D – Floor to the top of ears or head, whichever is higher.

Then calculate:

Length: A + ½ B
Width: C x 2
Height: D

The minimum interior length of the crate must equal A + ½ B

The minimum interior height of the crate must be equal to D

Tip: Stand your dog against a wall and mark the measurements for easier accuracy—less wiggling, more precision

Additional Airline Carrier Requirements

Wheels: Must be removed or rendered inoperable.
Labeling: Airline staff will apply "Live Animal" and directional labels.
Water & Food Dishes: Two separate or split dishes must be attached inside the kennel and accessible from outside the door.
Absorbent Lining: Use towels or blankets up to 3" thick. No hay, straw, or wood shavings.

Military Relocation- Once you receive your Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Orders, you will have plenty on your mind regarding your relocation. Often times, these orders come with little notice and relocating your pet can have requirements that involve some time and planning. Whether you decide to relocate your pet with you or relocate your pet to stay with a family or friend during your employment, we can help!

Your biggest challenge is going to be getting things packed up and gone and doing it with the least amount of hassle as possible. The Army does make it easy to get started on this quest with the ubiquitous transportation briefing. Your first milestone will be getting a copy of your orders to the new duty location. Absolutely NOTHING can happen without this valuable document. With this in hand, you can schedule your transportation briefing and all the other appointments you will need.

Don't have your orders yet? Don't fret that either. There are a few things you can do ahead of time, so when you DO get them, things will run ever so smoothly for you and your family.

MILITARY MOVE AND CHANGE OF STATION

Once you know you will be moving, there are a few tips to help you get organized.

Chances are that you have kids to relocate and settle into new schools and of course PETS! There are a few more logistical challenges when moving an entire family - here's a few tips:

If you are renting, check your lease and make sure you give advanced notice of your departure (I wouldn't do this until I physically had orders in hand...less chance of plans being changed and you having to move prematurely); if your lease has a military clause regardless of the time frame before you move, you can get out of your lease early (remember that the next time you rent; ask for a military clause)

To make things easier, there are some things that can be done at this early stage. Keep the following information in a lightweight binder or notebook which will go with you when you move.

Make a list of accounts with phone number and addresses that are going to be stopped when you move, such as telephone, electric, cable, and the newspaper
Make another list of accounts where you will forward the mail, such as your mobile phone, any magazine subscriptions, insurance, mortgages, investments, credit cards and bank accounts

I also recommend doing the following:

Try to find out as early as possible who your sponsor will be at your next duty station; they can send you housing and school information, maps and brochures; feel free to ask about hotels and also restrictions for pets and any other requirements you may have
Get a forwarding address you can use; it's usually the headquarters address for your new unit; verify this with your sponsor; you will use this address when you fill out your forwarding mail form at the post office before you move
IF YOU HAVE PETS, start researching the requirements online; what shots and health records are needed and are there any quarantine requirements; if your pet has never been in a crate, I suggest getting them used to it now; most pets love the safety and security of a crate if they get used to it beforehand. If you have other pets, such as fish or houseplants or anything else living you will not be taking with you, start giving away or selling that stuff earlier rather than later
If you own your house and will be keeping it, start advertising on the sites below about 6 months out; as it gets closer to your move date, start advertising in the newspaper and other avenues you can think of; identify who you are going to have manage your property. Trusted neighbors can watch over your home for a nominal fee than if you hired a realtor or a property management company (which typically charges 10% of the rent).

If you are selling your home, now is the perfect time to start de-cluttering it and getting it ready to show; start asking around for referrals to find a good realtor
Make a list of furniture and stuff you want to get rid of and at least start getting rid of it. One option is "long term storage"- basically your stuff is roped off in a big warehouse with other service members' stuff who also went overseas. If you have family heirlooms or special items you don't want to take overseas, make arrangements with a close relative to keep them for you while you are gone
Try to get the kids excited about the new duty station; focus on the positive; go online and look at photos and travel sites; contact the travel bureau there and request brochures and activities for the kids through the mail
If you are going overseas, make sure everyone's passport is current or will be when you move; check everyone's shot record too
Don't forget collecting your childrens' school reports and any other records they may need

For those of you that like to keep up with the smaller details- keep a binder with:

Orders and Moving Information (keep a handful of copies of your orders in here as well as the moving paperwork from your movers and any other paperwork dealing with your move)
Housing Info (housing info and contacts at your new duty station; if you are buying a house, that kind of stuff goes in here)
To Do Lists (Create a generic cleaning and check-out list to use every time you
move
Moving Expenses (Keep all receipts for food, lodging and travel in here; Even if the military pays for your move, keep track of what you are spending)
Home Repairs (if you own your own home, any home repairs or maintenance needing to be done go here)
Rental (if you are going to rent out your home, keep a move-in checklist here, as well as your rental contract and any other renter paperwork)
Schools (anything that has to do with the old school or new school goes in here)

When you collect up all your medical records before you leave, just put them in a big envelope with a clasp.

If you are going overseas, you are also going to have to think about your vehicles. Will you sell one or put it in storage? You are authorized to ship one vehicle over to most duty stations (in other words, the military pays for it). Identify an early date when you want to start trying to sell that extra vehicle. A vehicle needs to be driven to be maintained, it will lose its value, you will incur costs and the negatives outweigh the positives. Get rid of it.

HOW TO THESE PET SCAMS WORK ? These criminals often create fake websites and emails, copying legitimate company logos and company names. These criminals will post fake advertisement on the internet, typically Craigslist or Facebook advertising pets (usually puppies) for sale. Most often these pets are offered at no cost, and only ask the buying to pay for shipping or pet insurance. These scammers will ask you to wire the money via Western Union or Money Gram for shipping. This method of payment is not traceable. After you have sent the money, they will continue to extort mone! from you for things like health exam, health license, pet insurance, or a different travel crate. If you d not comply by sending more money, they will threaten you with adding charges for additional feeding and animal abandonment.

DOES THE ADVERTISEMENT SOUND TO GOOD TO BE TRUE ? YES ? Then it probably is a scam! First of all, there is no such thing as "pet insurance". These scammers will use every story to convince you that this is a legitimate transaction. They will lie and tell you anything to convince you that there is a puppy. They will send pictures of the pet (that does not exist) and copy company names If you look closely, there are almost always misspellings in the emails and the company name. The company email they are attempting to copy is spelled differently and the contact phone numbers do not match..

PET RELOCATION COMPANIES CAN BE VERIFIED. If the scammer claims to be working with a pet courier or pet transporter, you can verify that these companies are legitimate by visiting www.IPATA.ORG.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT THIS IS A PET SCAM? Here are a few signs that this is most likely a scam:

The person is offering a pet for free, especially pure breed pets, and asking that you only pay the shipping or pet insurance
Advertise the pet on Craigslist or Facebook.
The person won't allow you to meet with them in person and see the pet.
They are using a free email address such as Google, yahoo, outlook, Hotmail etc rather than a company email address.
They have frequent misspellings in their correspondence and ask you to pay for things that don't exist such as pet insurance.

Shipping Your Pet to Paradise: Guidelines for Pet Shipping to Hawaii

Pet transportation within the US, including Hawaii, can be more complex than anticipated.

If you're planning to bring your furry friend to Hawaii, it's important to note that even if you're traveling within the US, there are specific requirements you'll need to meet. To ensure the safety and well-being of all animals in Hawaii, the state has a strict 5 Day-Or-Less Program for pets.

Under this program, your pet must have a microchip implanted for identification purposes and must have received certain vaccinations at least twice in their lifetime. Additionally, your pet must have a rabies antibody test done at a certified laboratory no more than 36 months before arriving in Hawaii.

Furthermore, you'll need to obtain a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian within 14 days of your pet's arrival in Hawaii. This certificate must confirm that your pet is free from infectious or contagious diseases.

It's important to note that pets not meeting these requirements will be subject to quarantine, which can be costly and stressful for you and your pet. So, if you're planning to bring your pet to Hawaii, it's vital to do your research and ensure that you meet all the requirements of the 5 Day-Or-Less Program.

Hawaii's Animal Quarantine Law

In Hawaii, there are specific rules for bringing pets in. If cats and dogs don't meet all the requirements for the 5-Day-Or-Less program, they might have to stay in quarantine for up to 120 days when they arrive in Hawaii.

To qualify for the 5 Day-Or-Less Quarantine program in Hawaii, pets must have received two rabies vaccines with at least 30 days between each dose. With the summer comes the heat... which creates some challenges regarding pet shipping. Airlines have restrictions on certain breeds and temperatures depending on the origin and destination. At Continental Pet Relocation, we have the information regarding guidelines and restrictions in order to help facilitate your pet's relocation during the summer months.

Here are some additional tips regarding your pet and summer temperatures:

Never leave your pet in a car when you travel or do errands. During warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you're parked in the shade. Dogs and cats can't perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Pets left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. And if you do happen to see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked. If the owner does not return promptly, call local animal control (311 in Charlotte NC).

If you are relocating to a new home and have a long distance to travel with your pet, never ever leave your dog unattended in a closed vehicle during rest stops. If you must leave the car, designate a member of the family to stay with the dog. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins, and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs.

If your pet is exposed to high temperatures, be alert for signs of heat stress-heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue.

If your pet becomes overheated, you must lower her body temperature immediately.
Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over her body to gradually lower her temperature.
Apply ice packs or cool towels to your pet's head, neck, and chest only.
Let your pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.
Finally, take your pet directly to a veterinarian-it could save her life.

There are regulations and requirements to ship live animals that vary depending on the country of origin and country in which you are importing to. Often an ISO Microchip, International Health Certificate, and Rabies Certificate is required. Import Permits and Blood tests are also required in some countries as well as Quarantine.

With some countries the regulations are extensive and require time to plan well in advance with vaccines and blood tests. The costs involved depend on the weight and size of the pet and kennel, the destination, and the method in which they are transported. The most inexpensive way is to carry on board, but this is restricted to the smaller pets and the countries that allow import as excess baggage. What is involved in relocating your pet to the UK? The UK has specific requirements when importing your pet to the UK. They follow a set of rules and regulations referred to as the Pet Travel Scheme. Some new changes took effect December 2014 requiring owners to arrive into the country within +/- 5 days in order for the animal to be considered a "non commercial pet". This requires some planning with the vaccines, travel booking, and vet appointment for final health certificate. Additional documentation may be required for pets with vaccines more than 12 months old. Effective April 2017, The UK now requires a ToR (Transfer of Residence) number required for customs processing and VAT for all pets importing to the UK.

A basic summary of what is required to enter the UK from the US: Pets are required to be microchipped and vaccinated for rabies after the microchip was implanted. The ISO microchip is recommended. Pets must be at least 12 weeks of age prior to the rabies vaccine being administered. Pets must have an EU Passport or health certificate for travel. Dogs must be treated for tapeworm between 24 and 120 hours prior to arrival in to the UK. Please check with you pet relocation specialist to ensure an approved treatment is used. Some airlines will require a Letter of Acclimation. The Transfer of Residence is required for all pets arriving the UK.

Meet Leo, a 10 month old Cavapoo. We had the pleasure of helping him to relocate to live with his Grandma in East Sussex (South East England) to train to work as a Hospice Therapy Dog. Leo's mum Suzanne was heart broken to let him go, but knew that it was a good decision for him and for the benefit of others.

As a Hospice Therapy Dog, the goal is to enrich the quality of life for the hospice patient and often their families as well. The sight of the dogs and the touch of their fur often brings peace and joy to those patients whose life once included animals. Physical contact has a calming effect and dogs have the ability to bring back pleasant memories of a person's life. Therapy dogs help combat loneliness and they give people the chance to have something to look forward to. Exposure to the dogs allows the patient to feel needed and wanted at a time in their life when death is evident.

While working with a hospice program, dogs learn to be able to sense the process an individual goes through with death. Signs may include a change in breathing, restlessness or possible disorientation. In addition to the patient, dogs and handlers often have the ability to comfort family members including children. There are times when the family may request that the therapy dog lay by the end of the bed during the patient's final moments of life. This might be because the patient loved dogs and the sight of the dog brings a sense of normalcy for not only the patient but the family as well.

TRAVEL IN STYLE

If your pet is traveling by air, please be aware that airlines often specify particular types of approved containers for pets that are flying. Containers should always be large enough for your pet to stand up, lie down and turn around. For international travel it is required for kennels to be ventilated on all four sides.
